PROJECT CONCEPT

manifesto

/manɪˈfɛstəʊ/

noun

a public declaration of policy and aims, especially one issued before an election by a political party or candidate.

After coming across the manifesto online, I realised how powerful the simple communication of declaring what your movement stands for is. After listening to a lot of Riot Grrrl podcasts, public radio and youtube videos, I thought perhaps I could create a modern manifesto using snippets from all of these various sources. A sound collage, true to the punk ethos.

Similarly to Kathleen Hanna's repetition of BECAUSE for each point, I wanted to have consistency . I made each manifesto point title using a voice generator; I think the robot-human hybrid voice speaks to the 'cybergrrrl' /modern element of the project, and stands out from the other samples as they are all human voices.

My modified manifesto points:

1 Take over the means of production

2 we must grab our oppression by the roots

3 what do we produce? records, books, fanzines, press,

4 foster and support grrrl scenes

5 personal is political

6 the instant macho gun revolution is a lie. seek revolution in your own life every single day in your own way

7 don’t assimilate to someone else’s standards - stop slut shaming and victim blaming

8 create non-hierarchical ways of being

9 do, read, see, hear things that strengthen the movement and actively challenge racism, sexism, able-bodieism, ageism, classism, anti-semitism, heterosexism.

10 people above profit, end capitalism

11 share information: educate, express, and end ignorance

12 don’t let your anger be diffused by the internalisation of sexism

13 save the psychic and cultural lives of those oppressed
