REFLECTION

This project really helped learn the ropes of InDesign whilst exploring an unusual dynamic between format and content. Looking over the list of possible formats, passport intrigued me; a concise identification document with a purely functional system. I chose to pair this with one of my favourite artist, Sevdaliza's song 'Human'. It's abstract and existential tone fits quite interestingly with an ID format; with few lines it has a powerful impact, similarly to a passport. The visuals obviously stray from tradition; I chose to have a muted background consisting of multiple striking nudes of Sevdaliza; a raw portrayal of her humanity. The second page is much more unconventional, using darker imagery as a stark contrast, bringing an intensity to the piece. The ID photos are snapshots from her music video, showing dynamic poses as opposed to the formal passport photo. I chose to border these as they got lost within the busy background, and the red and white create an imposing look. Because of her Iranian decent, I chose to use the format of an Iranian passport; using a mixture of English and Persian text as a nice dialogue between the two cultures. Following the layout and typography of an Iranian passport, I mixed regular Arial Unicode with small caps, and Times New Roman regular for the Persian text. Details like the barcode, number in the corner and number codes really help build the impression of a passport. I also translated some of the verses into binary code and peppered this amongst the text; an observation on how our identities/humanity are condensed into data within a passport.
